Sycorax’s Tempest

My ballet Sycorax’s Tempest reimagines Shakespeare’s The Tempest through the eyes of Sycorax. Drawing on scholar Sylvia Wynter, Sycorax is no longer an absent figure but is present, the island’s sovereign soul, rising from the sea to shape her son, Caliban’s fate, and free the land from colonial claim. The ballet envisions Sycorax and the island spirits invoking harmony and forgiveness that leads to Prospero and his countrymen leaving.

Passing: the price of a ticket*

The contemporary dance piece is part of a series of four works all called ‘Passing:…‘. The series of dances all explore and reference different social-racial-political negotiations of identity, establishing one’s own identity.

  1. Passing: the price of a ticket (duet)
  2. Images from Passing: the price of a ticket (solo)

*Title inspired by the quote from James Baldwin ‘the price of the ticket’. I changed ‘the’ to ‘a’ because the word ‘the’ implies that the ticket is attainable at a cost. In the 21st Century, I question how available a ticket is to some people at all.

Passing: I right my own story

  1. Wayne State University performance, USA
  2. Images from a restaging at Middlesex University, UK . This restaging allowed me to continue my use of incorporating modified, real-time, live projection in the performance process.
